Because the foundation walls and framing remain exposed, installers can apply spray foam directly to the surfaces that need insulation and air sealing. This creates a continuous thermal barrier while helping control moisture movement through concrete walls.

Finished exterior walls are more challenging. In most cases, spray foam cannot simply be injected into a fully finished wall cavity the way loose-fill insulation sometimes can. Access is generally required, which may involve removing drywall during a renovation. 

For homeowners undertaking major remodelling projects, this can be an excellent opportunity to upgrade insulation while walls are already open. However, if the walls are finished and no renovation is planned, other areas of the home may provide a better return on investment.

Many older homes were built before modern air-sealing standards existed. As a result, they often contain gaps, drafts and insulation deficiencies that contribute to higher energy consumption and uneven temperatures.
